▶︎ organised by KÉK – Contemporary Architecture Centre

The Budapest Architecture Film Days has reached its eighteenth year. In the time it takes for a child to grow up, we have screened over 650 films. Traveling through space and time, we have brought stories—both old and new, successful or dauntingly cautionary—from all over the world: stories about architecture, cities, and the life that is inseparable from them. Although these films have equipped us with a wealth of knowledge for a wide variety of situations, the challenges of the present still leave us facing the future with a sense of uncertainty, much like a high school graduate preparing for a career choice.

What kind of future awaits us? Will our knowledge still be needed in a year or two? Is it we who must change, or will technology adapt the environment to us? Will the dynamics of technological progress or the pressure of ecological necessity set the new direction for the evolution of our cities, buildings, and societies?

In this year’s film selection, however, we find insightful initiatives that help update our visions of the future.

We see community-based urban development where participation and collective land ownership place urban planning on a new foundation. We meet creators pushing the boundaries of circular architecture and seeking new solutions to the energy crisis, providing answers on how to relate to climate change. Some look for a way out in space or future technologies, while other projects provide guidance for future decisions by preserving and processing our past’s heritage.

Various, sometimes radically different answers to the world’s challenges coexist, yet they all share one thing: however blurred it may be, they have a vision for the future. Just like an eighteen-year-old. Embracing their enthusiasm and zest for life, let us now celebrate together the festival’s coming of age.
