At the southern tip of Texas, located directly on the U.S.–Mexico border, the village of Boca Chica is transformed by the arrival of SpaceX’s headquarters and launch site in 2018. As SpaceX expands, residents are displaced, public access to the beach is restricted, and the village shifts from a lived-in place to a controlled technological zone. At the same time, Boca Chica attracts space enthusiasts who see Mars as an escape from Earth’s crises, while close-by, Mexican families live under constant border surveillance.
Alongside these human stories, scientists warn about the consequences of the renewed space race. The once-theoretical Kessler Syndrome, in which orbital debris triggers a chain of destructive collisions, is now a serious concern. Through Boca Chica, the film portrays a world at a turning point, asking whether humanity’s reach for the stars represents hope—or a dangerous overreach.
